9 grenades — 3 possibly live — found in Bakersfield home

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KGET) — Kern County sheriff’s deputies received an unusual call this week — a man in east Bakersfield had possession of a possible live grenade.

They ended up finding much more — a total of nine grenades, three of which were possibly live, according to a warrant and sheriff’s officials.

The Bomb Squad seized them for further examination and disposal, officials said.

Also found were a spent M22 smoke grenade, military memorabilia, ammunition and firearms, officials said.

No arrests had been made as of Friday morning.

On late Wednesday afternoon, deputies arrived at a home on Franklin Avenue where the homeowner confirmed he had grenades taken from the Twentynine Palms Marine Corps base in southern California, according to a warrant filed in Superior Court. He said he obtained them in the 1970s.

During an initial search two grenades were found, according to the warrant. The owner told deputies their explosive powder had been removed.

“(The homeowner) allowed deputies to enter his residence with him and allowed deputies to examine two green military-style grenades which appeared to be intact with no signs of the grenades having been unable to explode,” the warrant says.

The homeowner told deputies there may be other grenades in the house — but he wasn’t sure where.

The home was evacuated and the sheriff’s Bomb Squad summoned. Three grenades were taken to be destroyed elsewhere.
