9-1-1 has shocked fans after dead character Doug Kendall (Brian Hallisay) returned for a brief cameo.
Last night's (May 2) episode 'There Goes The Groom' focuses on Maddie Buckley (Jennifer Love Hewitt) and Howard 'Chimney' Han's (Kenneth Choi) wedding.
However, things initially take a chaotic turn after Howard goes missing after contracting a viral infection and experiencing hallucinations, the character taking a confused journey around Los Angeles.

As part of the terrifying ordeal, he hallucinates Maddie's ex Doug Kendall (played by Hewitt's real-life husband Brian Hallisay), who fans will remember was abusive towards her, before she ultimately killed him in season 2 in self-defence.
Fans watching expressed their shock at seeing Doug, one writing on X/Twitter: "NO WHY IS DOUG HERE."
"Even imaginary Doug sucks huh," another added, while a third wrote: "WHY IS HE BEING HAUNTED BY HIM WHEN I CATCH YOU HALLUCINATION DOUG."
Opening up about the unexpected cameo, Choi explained to TVLine that while the appearance is “so jarring”, the scenes “needed to have someone like Doug to serve as Chimney’s counterpoint”.

The star further revealed that showrunner Tim Minear pitched it as "Chimney’s psyche battling between whether he should press on or just give up”.
“When Tim first said it, I thought, ‘Oh, that sounds interesting. But how is that going to look?'” Choi added. “Then I read the script and was super excited. Tim has this way of making all the dots connect. He’s so good at weaving this intricate web.”
He also praised the "terrific" Hallisay, adding: "I thought it was wonderful having him back."
Thankfully, Maddie and Howard do eventually get married, while the episode also features a hallucination cameo from Howard's late cousin Kevin (James Chen).
9-1-1 airs on ABC in the US, while 9-1-1: Lone Star airs on FOX. Both are available on Hulu in the US, and Disney+ in the UK.
