9-1-1 season seven has teased a deadly cruise that puts Angela Bassett’s character Athena Grant in danger, in a new trailer.

The procedural drama returns to ABC later this month, and it looks set to be the most dramatic start to a season to date.

In the premiere episode, Athena and her husband Captain Bobby Nash (Peter Krause) head on a cruise for their honeymoon, with the opening seconds of the trailer showing the couple relaxing together on their holiday.

However, things soon go very wrong, when the cruise ship is boarded by terrorists who are armed with weapons, leaving all of its passengers fearing for their lives.

"Life is a whirlwind," says Athena in a voiceover during the trailer. "When there’s disaster to deal with, who are we?"

What follows is a battle for survival that includes huge explosions and the threat of the vessel going under, with the cruise ship beginning to take on water.

The emotional new clip shows the Los Angeles first responders racing into action to help their friends – but Athena takes matters into her own hands and tries to save the ship herself.

Bobby is seen worrying and asking others where his wife is, so it is likely that the couple get separated from one another, even if only temporarily.

With the pair appearing close to drowning in one scene, will Athena and Bobby both be okay?

A previously released trailer showed the cruise ship engulfed in a fireball in the middle of the ocean, so it’s clear that the show’s beloved characters will be in serious peril.

Last month, 9-1-1’s showrunner Tim Minear described the upcoming cruise disaster as a "big, exciting arc that goes on for about three episodes" – so there will be plenty of drama to come for viewers.

The dramatic story arc will also see The Vampire Diaries star Rick Cosnett join the cast as charismatic cruise director Julian Enes.

The seventh season of 9-1-1 will be the first to air on ABC, after Fox initially cancelled the show – while continuing to air its spin-off series 9-1-1: Lone Star.

9-1-1 season 7 premieres on ABC on March 14.
