8th grade basketball team heads to state tournament

SCRANTON, LACKAWANNA COUNTY (WBRE/WYOU) — There was a big send-off Thursday for the boy’s basketball team at Saint Clare Saint Pauls in Scranton.

The school held a pep rally earlier this morning, students, parents, and faculty gathered in the gymnasium to celebrate the boy’s season so far and get excited for their big tournament this weekend in Erie.

They’ll represent the diocese of Scranton in the state catholic youth organization tournament.

Mayor cognetti joined in on the celebration to give the team words of encouragement, and the Scranton Fire Department, Pennsylvania state troopers, and even a bagpiper led the escort for the team’s bus for a proper send-off.

“They get to play for something really special, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for a lot of these guys so they’re really jazzed,” Saint Clare Saint Pauls eighth grade basketball Head coach Burke McGrath.

“There’s a couple generations of kids of families that have come here, prayed here, and played basketball here so it’s a ton of fun,” said parent Matt Haggerty.

Since 1982, Saint Clare Saint Paul has competed in this state tournament 26 times and won the tournament six times.
