I-85 South reopens near exit 20 in Gaston County, major backups remain

GASTON COUNTY, N.C. (QUEEN CITY NEWS) — Interstate 85 southbound reopened on Monday afternoon following an incident in Gaston County, according to NCDOT.

“I-85 southbound is expected to be closed for several hours this afternoon due to a police investigation,” Gaston County Government reported Monday morning.

I-85 southbound was closed near Exit 20, New Hope Road, at mile marker 20 before it reopened around 12:45 p.m. The incident occurred just before 11 a.m., NCDOT reported.

Heavy congestion remains in the area. Drivers are advised to “slow down and watch for slow or stopped traffic in the area.”
