800 HP Prius with Hellcat engine can run a 9-second quarter-mile

Headers fabricator Nick Filippides visited Jay Leno’s Garage to show off his heavily modified 2005 Toyota Prius, which has a Dodge Hellcat crate engine crammed inside.

Like most brilliant inventions, this monster was born out of necessity. “This is something that I concocted just driving on the Long Island Expressway and having that HOV lane and sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic and just watching the conga line of Priuses going by,” Filippides said. “So I said, ‘You know what? One of these days, we’re gonna get one of these cars, and I’m gonna put it on that lane.'”

A stock 2005 Prius creates 110 horsepower, but this car, nicknamed the PriuSRT8, generates 800. It also has a 4.5-liter Whipple supercharger upgrade, fully reworked chassis, and gorgeous custom headers as part of a fully revamped exhaust system.

All the fabrications and modifications have led to a car that can allegedly do a quarter-mile drag in nine seconds. To put that in perspective, the fastest stock Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche quarter-mile times are 9.8, 10.2, and 9.8 seconds, respectively. And while the car may have cost $21,275 brand new, it is now worth almost as much as a supercar: $150,000.

Jay Leno’s Garage airs Thursdays at 10 p.m. on CNBC.
