I-80 closing in Joliet for bridge replacement project

JOLIET, Ill. — I-80 is closing near Joliet overnight beginning early Wednesday morning for an ongoing bridge replacement project.

The project is replacing the bridge carrying Briggs Street over I-80.

Beginning Tuesday at 9 p.m., westbound lanes will be reduced to one lane approaching Briggs Steet.

A detour will be in place.

The area will be fully closed from approximately 1 a.m. to 5 a.m. Wednesday as crews work to install support beams.

The next night at 1 a.m. Thursday, eastbound lanes will be closed until 5 a.m. to complete the project.

The $7.3 million project, which involves replacing the existing bridge with a new structure to accommodate the widening of I-80, is anticipated to be completed by the end of this year.
