75 acres of land next to El Capitan County Preserve now protected

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — On Wednesday, the county took additional steps to protect 75 acres of land at El Monte Road in Lakeside.

The area is adjacent to the popular El Capitan County Preserve.

The Board of Supervisors approved the donation, adding more space as well as species protection to wildlife that roam in the domain.

According to the county, the land fits into their Multiple Species Conservation Plan, which now preserves a total of 46,300 acres regionally.

El Capitan County Preserve will now connect with the Historic Flume Corridor and El Monte County Park. The county said it will also improve regional trail opportunities and protect the native habitat, as well as support sustainability goals for species conservation that will:

  • Reduce greenhouse gas emissions by approximately 95 metric tons of carbon dioxide equivalent per year. This is equivalent to the annual number of emissions produced by about 20 gasoline-powered passenger vehicles.

  • Expand opportunities for outdoor recreation in nature.

  • Expand open space next to native ecosystems and habitats.

More information can be found on the conservation plan’s webpage.
