Dodge‘s 707-horsepower Hellcat engine lives at home in cars like the Charger and Challenger; and eventually will find its way into a Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT. But so far, we haven’t the applauded engine it in a truck. That doesn’t mean there aren’t folks who would like to have one, so that’s what one dealership did.
According to Road&Track, this RamCat was built by Midland Chrysler of Ontario, Canada. General manager Josh Hatton said they bought a crate Hellcat engine from a South Carolina dealership for $45,000 and went to work.
They started the project in November, 2015, and have spent a large part of the time since figuring out wiring and electronics. Since there isn’t a 6.2-liter V8 offered for the Ram 1500, it was quite a bit of work to make it function like a stock vehicle.
They had to modify the firewall and oil pan, move the battery, and reprogram the powertrain control module. Hatton says the finished truck is just like a production vehicle with all the gauges and interior components functioning perfectly.
It was initially intended as a one-off, but with so much interest they’ve decided to build them on request at a cost of about $90,000.
