706 People Named Kyle Meet Up in Texas, But Still Can't Break World Record Set by European City in 2017

The City of Kyle in Texas has been trying to break the world record since 2017

Hundreds of people gathered in a Texas city to try and break a unique world record, but ultimately came up short once again.

The City of Kyle is looking to set a record for largest gathering of people with one name, and has now tried to do so five times, according to a news release from the city.

The city’s latest attempt at entering the record books occurred Saturday, May 18, at Lake Kyle Park. This time, they fell significantly short of the record.

Only 706 people showed up to the 2024 “Kyle Fair,” according to NBC affiliate KPRC-TV and CBS News.

More than twice as many people attended the fair in 2023, which drew an estimated 1,490 individuals, city officials said.

The current record was set by the city of Kupreski Kosci in Bosnia and Herzegovina on July 30, 2017, when 2,325 individuals named Ivan gathered together.

Since then, the Texas city has tried to top them. In 2017, more than 100 people showed up for the city’s first attempt, which allowed people with similar first names to Kyle — like Kyle or Kylie — or the middle name Kyle to participate.

But the rules were tightened prior to the second attempt in 2018. However, just 27 people showed up that year. And in 2019, there were only 34 people in attendance.

Even though 2024 did not match the expectations set by 2023, attendees at this year's far still enjoyed soaking up the sun with their fellow Kyles.

“I feel like we’re all as one, like all the Kyles are one,” one Kyle said, per ABC affiliate KVUE. “Even though we had different personalities, I feel like we were all connected somehow.”

Kyle is the second largest city in Hays County, according to a news release from city officials. It is about 26 miles south of Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and 50 miles north of San Antonio International Airport.

The name Kyle became increasingly popular for boys in the late 1900s, peaking at No. 18 on the list of most popular boy names in 1990, according to data from the Social Security Administration. But the name’s popularity has waned in recent years.

By 2023, Kyle was ranked 416th on the list of most popular baby boy names. Just 754 boys were named Kyle that year, compared to a whopping 22,709 in 1990.
