700 pounds of illegally caught shrimp seized

La. authorities seize 700 pounds of shrimp from boat with no permit, no working horn

LAKE CHARLES, La. (AP) -- The U.S. Coast Guard has seized 700 pounds of shrimp illegally caught in Louisiana on Monday.

The Coast Guard says in a news release that authorities found the crew of the fishing vessel Waymaker did not have the documentation or equipment required by law, including a working horn.

Authorities say in addition to not having the required Gulf of Mexico shrimp permit, the Waymaker was not using turtle exclusion devices in its shrimp trawls. The crew was also cited for a shortage of working fire extinguishers and lack of a functioning horn.

The Coast Guard says the vessel was stopped on a routine patrol when the violations were discovered.

The NOAA ship registry shows the Waymaker registered to a private owner in Lake Charles.
