Several Colorado highways close as snow hits the mountains

DENVER (KDVR) — Highways were closed in Colorado as a major snowstorm dumped feet of snow in the mountains, foothills and Denver metro area.

Here were the major closures in Colorado as of 10:40 p.m. Thursday, according to the Colorado Department of Transportation:

  • US 6 Loveland Pass from mile point 222 to 229

  • CO 9 Hoosier Pass from mile point 64-80 – not a viable detour for any vehicles from I-70 – passenger vehicles may stay on I-70

  • CO 14 from mile point 61-121

  • CO 46 from mile point 0 – 6

  • US 6 Clear Creek Canyon mile point 257 – 271

  • Multiple other routes may be blocked due to crashes, stuck semi trucks and other issues. Delays are likely on any roadway impacted by the storm

A stretch of I-70 will not be passable for commercial motor vehicles until noon on Friday, CDOT said. Restrictions are in place from mile point 169 (Eagle/Vail) to MP 259 (Morrison Exit).

Safety closures of Interstate 25 were “highly likely” over Monument Hill, according to CDOT. Travelers were advised to carry an emergency road kit.

Interstate 70 was closed from Denver to Vail starting Wednesday night and did not reopen until around 3:45 p.m. Thursday.

A winter storm warning was issued from Wednesday through Friday because of heavy snow and high winds expected across the state. Feet of snow are possible in areas east of the Continental Divide, foothills and Denver metro area.

CDOT issued these warnings:

  • Commercial vehicles must have tire chains or alternate traction devices

  • Adequate snow tires or alternate traction devices are likely to be required for passenger vehicles

  • Travelers should have provisions in their vehicle to spend extended duration before rescue if they get stuck, including food, water and blankets

Snowfall is expected to persist into Friday morning.
