7-year-old drowns in Springfield pool, police investigating

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. (WCIA) — A seven-year-old boy has died after Springfield authorities said he drowned in a home pool over the weekend.

The death happened in the area of Winnebago Drive and Tamaroa Road Saturday afternoon. Springfield Police officials said that when officers arrived, the boy was in the deep end, submerged and unresponsive. The boy was retrieved from the pool and was taken to HSHS St. John’s Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An autopsy was performed on Monday. Sangamon County Coroner Jim Allmon said the preliminary results were consistent with drowning as the cause of death.

The boy’s death remains under investigation by the Springfield Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division and the Sangamon County Coroner’s Office.
