Coronation Street fans have been treated to some epic storylines of late. We've seen serial killer Phelan finally get his comeuppance, David Platt struggling in the wake of his sexual abuse at the hands of Josh Tucker, and the devastating scenes that saw Aidan Connor take his own life.

But with each of those stories coming to a conclusion, it's time for some new faces to sparkle in Weatherfield. There are some huge plots heading our way this summer, bringing some of the characters who have been simmering in the background to the forefront of Corrie life.

Get ready for a new wave of stars…

1. Jack Webster (Kyran Bowes)

With Jack's heartbreaking sepsis storyline well under way, young actor Kyran has already shown he is more than up to the challenge of his biggest storyline to date. This week sees Jack facing life as an amputee when dad Kevin is forced to make the decision to have his son's foot removed in order to save his life.

But as the seven-year-old football fanatic struggles to come to terms with his new way of life, Kyran will have some challenging scenes ahead of him over the next few months.

Speaking for the first time about this storyline, Kyran said: "I was excited and proud to be trusted with such a big, important storyline. I did feel a bit nervous at first because I had never heard of sepsis before and didn't know what it does to you.

"My mum and dad explained to me as much as they knew and we looked it up on the internet quite a bit. I wanted to know more about sepsis, so I knew what to expect and how I could act out the story properly."

2. Kayla Clifton (Mollie Winnard)

The fact that Kayla is Neil Cliffton's daughter might be a well-kept secret for now, but every soap fan knows that these things have a habit of getting out. And as Kayla ups her game of revenge, looking for justice for her dad who she believes has been falsely jailed for being part of the gang who groomed and raped Bethany Platt last year, both Bethany and an unsuspecting Craig Tinker had better start watching their backs.

Kayla is the perfect villain for Corrie, she looks sweet and innocent on the outside, but inside she's looking for revenge and nothing is going to get in her way. With Kayla's scheming set to play out over the summer, newcomer Mollie Winnard is definitely going to get her chance to shine. And if the last few weeks are anything to go by, she will also be earning herself some well-deserved awards nominations.

3. Johnny Connor ( Richard Hawley)

Ever since the devastating moment when Johnny discovered Aidan's lifeless body back in May, Richard Hawley has put himself on the acting map. But things are set to get more dramatic for his character as Johnny fights for custody of his granddaughter Susie.

Whether you're team Eva or team Johnny (Is there anyone who's team Johnny?), there's no denying that the next few weeks are going to be tense as the battle for Susie continues. There will be plenty more drama for Johnny to come, paving the way for Richard to show Corrie fans what he's made of.

4. Sean Tully (Antony Cotton)

Antony Cotton has played Sean Tully since 2003, but this latest homelessness storyline that is starting to unfold is arguably his biggest storyline to date.

For a long time Sean has been kicking around in the background, providing the comedy element that we all love Corrie for, but at last he has been given a chance to shine with his own hard-hitting storyline. And what a storyline is it.

Coronation Street is renowned for using its platform to raise awareness for important causes, and Sean finding himself sleeping on the streets is certainly one of those.

5. Maria Connor (Samia Longchambon)

Corrie fans might be used to seeing Samia on screen folding towels in the salon, but that's all about to change as her alter ego Maria embarks on a new storyline – and surprisingly it is one that doesn't involve a man!

As Maria looks too further her career in hairdressing, fans will already know that she's set to clash with boss Audrey when she asks to invest in the business and gets turned down. But as Audrey's old frenemy Claudia comes back to the cobbles and offers Maria the chance to run one of her salons, it looks like Samia is about to get the chance to show everyone what she's made of.

6. Sally Metcalfe (Sally Dynevor)

Lovely Sally might be best known for her scenes focused on family life, but that's all about to change as her next storyline unfolds.

As newcomer Duncan swindles the council out of £40,000, Sally's position as the local mayor comes under jeopardy, leaving her devastated. Actress Sally Dynevor has got some great scenes in the pipeline, proving to everyone that just because she's been acting on the cobbles for the last 30 years doesn't mean she's lost her spark.

7. Kevin Webster (Michael Le Vell)

Michael Le Vell might have been in Coronation Street since 1983, but that doesn't mean he's resting on his laurels. In his current storyline where his alter ego Kevin Webster is forced to make the heartbreaking decision to have his son's foot amputated, Michael has already proved that he's still got what it takes to draw audiences in.

With Jack's sepsis storyline far from over, Michael is being given the chance to show Corrie fans that Kevin is more than just a mechanic with a penchant for a pint in The Rovers after work.

Coronation Street airs on ITV.
