67-year-old pedestrian killed in Friday morning accident in Albany

ALBANY – A Friday morning collision between an Albany Police Department patrol car and a Crisp County Schools bus claimed the life of a pedestrian who was struck at the scene.

Dougherty County Coroner Michael Fowler identified the man who was killed as Robert Wayne Skaggs, 67.

The police officer was answering an emergency call at the time when the police SUV and bus collided at the intersection of North Jefferson Street and Seventh Avenue according to the Georgia State Patrol.

“It’s looking like the school bus driving northbound on (North) Jefferson Street came into the intersection as a police department officer running lights and sirens to a burglary in progress call” entered the intersection, Georgia State Patrol Trooper Justin Lewis said.

The police SUV was traveling east at the time of the collision, which occurred at about 11 a.m. The front end of the police cruiser was mangled.

The pedestrian was pinned to a traffic light post by the bus, the trooper said.

Seven patients, including several students, were reportedly transported from the scene to nearby Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital, with three of those in critical condition.
