67-year-old in critical condition after R.I. hit and run

Rock Island police are investigating a hit and run that took place Wednesday afternoon, Feb. 21, 2024.

At approximately 3:53 p.m., an officer with the Rock Island Police Department attempted a traffic stop on a black Chevrolet Impala in the 4200 block of 11th Street. The driver of the suspect vehicle fled southbound from the traffic stop, at which time the officer discontinued further attempts to stop the vehicle, and pulled over, police said Thursday.

The suspect vehicle continued south from the area at a high rate of speed, turning eastbound onto Blackhawk Road and striking a 67-year old male bicyclist in the roadway.

The suspect vehicle then fled the crash scene, abandoning the vehicle in the 4500 block of 12th Street and running from the area. The victim was transported by paramedics to Unity Point Trinity Medical Center for treatment and was later admitted to the University of Iowa Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition, police said.

Officers were able to locate the driver of the suspect vehicle, 21-year old Jimmie Lightner III, and take him into custody in the 1200 block of 46th Avenue. Lightner was charged with Aggravated Fleeing and Eluding, Reckless Driving, and Failure to Report an Accident Causing Great Bodily Harm.
