60,000 vehicles in Sacramento reportedly have deadly airbags: OTS says

(FOX40.COM) — In an effort to inform California’s tens of thousands of drivers of possible recalls on their vehicles, multiple safety agencies are holding a news conference in Roseville about these potentially deadly malfunctions.

On May 13, The Office of Traffic Safety (OTS), New Motor Vehicle Board (NMVB), California New Car Dealers Association (CNCDA), and National Safety Council (NSC) will be at the Roseville Auto Mall to make sure drivers know the laws and procedures behind recalls.

Roseville police warn of ‘smoking car’ scam

The Office of Traffic Safety said there are 60,000 registered vehicles in Sacramento that have unrepaired airbags from the “largest automotive recall in history” that still affects more than 700,000 vehicles in California.

“Referred to as the “Takata Airbag Recall” for the name of the now bankrupt parts supplier, the airbag canisters in defective airbag inflators could explode and spray sharp metal fragments toward the driver and passengers – similar to shrapnel from an exploding grenade,” the OTS wrote in a news release.

So far this defect has killed four California residents, 27 nationwide and injured over 400 people.

“California has more vehicles with the potentially deadly airbags than any other state,’ the OTS continued. “More than 50 million vehicles on the road in the U.S. have some unresolved safety recall.”

The OTS and its partner agencies say that they want vehicle owners to know that these repairs can be done for free at any authorized dealer, no matter where the car was purchased from.
