6 Stonington stores fail inspection of tobacco, e-cigarette sales

Jul. 1—STONINGTON — Six stores here failed surprise inspections of their tobacco and e-cigarette sales this week, according to police.

The police department, together with the state Department of Mental Health and Addiction Services Tobacco Prevention Enforcement Program, conducted eight unannounced inspections throughout Stonington on Wednesday to see if stores were following state law when selling tobacco and e-cigarette products by checking ID's for anyone under 30 years old.

Six of the eight stores weren't following the law, the department said. Chucky's Sunoco at 60 Broad St., Bestway Food Store and Smoke Shop at 380 Liberty St. and Hamm's Wine Cellar at 7 Liberty St. in Pawcatuck; Shell Stonington Village Foodmart at 522 Stonington Road in Stonington; and Citgo at 48 Stonington Road and Mobil Mart at 66 Whitehall Ave. in Mystic all failed their inspections.

Clerks at all six stores were issued tickets for $300, police said.

The results of the failed inspections will be referred to the Connecticut Department of Revenue for potential administrative action, the department said.

Tate's Place Package Store at 372 Liberty St. in Pawcatuck and Chucky's Shell at 242 Greenmanville Ave. in Mystic were also inspected and found to be following state law, police said.
