Six people were transported to hospital, including five youths, after a "noxious substance" was sprayed inside a Brampton high school on Thursday, according to emergency services and the local school board.

First responders were called to Sandalwood Heights Secondary School just after noon for an assault call, Peel paramedics said, where they assessed eight people. Five minors and one adult were brought to the hospital in stable condition after suffering minor injuries, paramedics said.

It's unclear exactly what substance caused the injuries.

Peel Regional Police said officers were investigating the release of a "possible aerosol device" in the area of Torbram Road and Sandalwood Parkway, adding paramedics were treating victims for minor respiratory irritation.

Meanwhile, the Peel District School Board said in a statement a "noxious substance" was sprayed inside the school.

"With the safety of our students and staff in mind, school administrators and staff helped to evacuated students from the building," the statement said.

"Police and emergency personnel were at the school to look into the situation and provide treatment for affected students and staff."

The board said said parents and caregivers of the affected students have been notified.

Shortly after 1:30 p.m., Brampton Fire said the scene was under control and fire crews had departed.
