15 Centre County wrestlers set for trip to PIAA Championships in Hershey

As the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Championships came to an end on Saturday, 10 Centre County wrestlers were able to keep their seasons alive.

Six of those wrestlers secured their spots on Friday night as four others worked their way through the consolation brackets to punch their tickets to the PIAA Championships in Hershey next week.

When it came to the team race, everyone was competing for second place as Bishop McCort was well ahead and finished with 237.5 points. Bentworth finished second, 153.5 points behind, with Frazier rounding out the top three.

Bald Eagle Area finished fifth with 75.5 points. Penns Valley, which was 20th after Friday, ended up ninth with 65.5 points.

Bellefonte was tied for 15th at 38 points with McGuffey, Northern Bedford and Quaker Valley. Philipsburg-Osceola finished 20th with 36 points.

Here’s a look at how the four county teams fared:

Champions: Caleb Close (189)

State qualifiers: Tanner Guenot (2nd, 107 pounds), Caden Judice (3rd, 114)

Eliminated: Dawson Lomison (1-2, 133 pounds), Mason Reese (1-2, 145)

Recap: The Eagles had all five of their wrestlers alive on the second day of the tournament.

When everything was finished, they pushed three through to Hershey with Close claiming the lone title for Centre County’s teams.

The junior dominated his way to the finals as he shut out Bentworth’s Vitali Daniels, 15-0, in 2:26 of wrestling. It was a match that was highly anticipated, but Close made it look easy as he raced out to a 13-0 lead after one period of wrestling.

In the finals, Close took on a District 6 foe in Huntingdon’s Andrew McMonagle, who he beat in the district finals two weeks ago. The results were the same on Saturday night.

Close held a 3-0 lead after two periods. McMonagle tied it up midway through the third period, but Close was able to escape and collected a caution point for a 5-3 win.

It was his second straight regional crown.

“Last year, I thought it was a bigger deal than what it was. My goal ever since I was little was winning states,” Close said. “Last year, I got a little too satisfied after it. This year, I’m just trying to stay focused on my main goal, so that’s probably the difference.”

Close wasn’t the only finalist as Guenot joined him.

After using a 4-1 win over Burrell’s Cam Baker to make the finals, the freshman squared off with a familiar foe in Chestnut Ridge’s Dominic Deputy. Deputy handed Guenot his lone loss of the season, 3-1, in the Laurel Highlands Athletic Conference finals at the beginning of January.

Guenot was able to close that gap between him and Deputy, but it wasn’t closed enough to get a win. Deputy used a second-period escape hold up in a 1-0 win.

“I need to close the gap a little bit more. I’m almost there,” Guenot said. “I just need to keep working and keep improving. Obviously, he’s a great opponent and very fun to wrestle every time.”

Judice secured his trip to Hershey on Saturday, but had to put in some extra work to get there.

He dropped into the consolation bracket on Friday evening, and rattled off four straight wins to finish third. Judice’s 5-3 win over Avonworth’s Auston Kosanovic secured his first PIAA appearance after claiming a Louisiana state title last year as a freshman.

“I’m really excited to wrestle in Hershey, but we’re not done yet. I really want to be on the podium, that’s the main goal,” Judice said. “I was really excited to wrestle in that arena (for team states) where all those good guys wrestled. I can’t wait to get in there on Thursday and do my best to get on the podium.”

Friday’s action

The Eagles were supposed to have seven wrestlers hit the mat, but ended up having only five as seniors Lucas Fye and Gavin Bennett were unable to go.

Fye suffered an infection in his knee, which kept him from being at the tournament. Bennett, who was at the tournament, suffered a shoulder injury in the District 6 Championships two weeks ago but wasn’t sufficiently healed in time.

“Obviously, it hurts not having Lucas here. The circumstances are beyond his control. If he could go, he’d be going, but he couldn’t,” coach Ron Guenot said. “We had to look forward with what we have. We have the five guys. The goal was to qualify five guys for states, so we’re still sticking with that goal. We have to be positive and get the next best thing, and that’s what we’re going to try to do tomorrow.”

BEA’s Tanner Guenot and Caleb Close were able to secure spots in Hershey next week by reaching the semifinals. It will be Guenot’s first trip and Close’s third straight.

Both had dominant days, recording bonus points in both of their wins.

Close pinned his way to the semifinals.

He opened by sticking Laurel’s Kolton Carlson in 41 seconds. The American commit picked up another first-period pin by putting Frazier’s Jackson Angelo in 1:57.

Tanner Guenot opened by securing a 23-7 technical fall in 5:04 over Central Valley’s Angelo Boni. In the quarterfinals, he earned a 13-5 major decision over Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria.

“We got two guys that are going to Hershey. Those two guys need to build on their performance and do what they normally do,” Coach Guenot said.

Judice was the only other Eagles wrestler to make the quarterfinals after he opened with a 15-0 technical fall in 3:43 over Beth Center’s Alex Medlen.

The sophomore suffered a 6-4 loss to Bentworth’s Drake McClure to be sent to the consolation bracket.

“It’s not easy, sometimes you got to do it the harder way in the consolation bracket. You got to take it one at a time,” Coach Guenot said. “You got to win two more to punch your ticket. It’s not the end of the world, but it stinks. Hopefully, he’ll rebound tomorrow morning.”

Penns Valley’s Ty Watson aims to takedown Burgettstown’s Rudy Brown in their 152-pound quarterfinals match of the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Championships on Friday, March 1, 2024 in Altoona. Watson snuck past Brown, 3-1. Jillian Anderson/For the CDT

Champions: None

State qualifiers: Erik Carlile (5th, 114 pounds), Colten Shunk (3rd, 133), Ty Watson (3rd, 152), Ethan Fetterolf (6th, 160)

Other placewinners: Brayden Lisowski (8th, 145)

Eliminated: Conner Myers (0-2, 107 pounds, Friday), Jack Darlington (0-2, 121), Tripp Watson (0-2, 127), Shane Rimmey (0-2, 189)

Recap: The Rams had a rough first day of the tournament.

However, they looked like a totally different team on the second day.

They were able to get four of their nine regional qualifiers to the PIAA Championships, which is the most in the program’s history.

“It’s great having teammates along for the trip. It makes everything better and makes it more fun. Team is everything,” said Ty Watson, who will be making his third straight appearance. “I’d do anything for them, and I’m sure every one of them would do anything for me as well. It’s always great having some teammates along to go to Chocolate Town.”

Watson and Shunk were the highest finishers for Penns Valley. It is no surprise since they are both seniors.

Watson suffered a heartbreaking 5-4 loss to Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover in the semifinals – his third of the year to Hoover. He rebounded nicely by racking up a 19-0 technical fall on Mt. Pleasant’s Greg Shaulis in 3:46.

Watson needed a late takedown and collected some nearfall points to top Elizabeth Forward’s Damon Michaels, 9-4, in sudden victory for his third place finish.

“Growing up, I always looked up to those bigger kids in high school. Standing on the state podium and even making it to states,” Watson said, “is a great accomplishment for me. I look forward to it every year. I didn’t achieve what I wanted in this tournament, so hopefully I will get a little better in the next two or three days, and get on top of the podium next week.”

Penns Valley’s Colten Shunk finishes off a takedown of Montour’s Anthony Orlandini in their 133-pound quarterfinals match of the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Championships on Friday, March 1, 2024 in Altoona. Shunk beat Orlandini, 4-3, to earn a spot in Hershey. Jillian Anderson/For the CDT

Shunk is making his second straight appearance in the state tournament.

He was sent to the consolation bracket with an 8-3 loss to Quaker Valley’s Jack Kazalas, but pinned Frazier’s Tyler Clark in 4:49 to make the consolation finals.

Shunk took on Burgettstown’s Parker Sentipal, who is a three-time PIAA qualifier coming into the year. His second period takedown was the difference in a 3-2 victory.

“My brother always tells me to move my feet. I wrestle better when I move my feet, so that’s what I was doing,” Shunk said. “I’m just grateful for another opportunity to compete in Hershey. It doesn’t come by often. I’m ready to go compete.”

Carlile and Fetterolf will both be making their first trips to Hershey as competitors after rallying through the consolation bracket.

Penns Valley’s Ethan Fetterolf controls Frazier’s Ryan Celaschi in their 160-pound consolation semifinals match of the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday, March 2, 2024 in Altoona. Fetterolf was pinned by Celaschi, but had already earned his first trip to Hershey. Jillian Anderson/For the CDT

Fetterolf, who lost his first match of the tournament in the second round, put together two great matches to reach the consolation quarterfinals. He took on District 6 foe in Huntingdon’s Grady Clark.

The duo faced off two times before the postseason began splitting both matchups. However, it has been all Fetterolf in the postseason.

He beat Clark in the District 6 quarterfinals to secure his regional spot. On Saturday, Fetterolf topped Clark, 5-3, to secure his PIAA spot.

“I’m excited to be able to go and be there for the experience. I’m excited to see what I can do and how well I can place,” Fetterolf said.

Penns Valley’s Erik Carlile controls United’s Jacob Sombronski in their 114-pound consolation quarterfinals match of the PIAA Class 2A Southwest Regional Championships on Saturday, March 2, 2024 in Altoona. Carlile beat Sombronski, 2-1, to secure his spot in Hershey. Jillian Anderson/For the CDT

Carlile became the first freshman in Penns Valley’s history to make the PIAA Championships.

He’s had quite the ride to get here too. He wasn’t officially cleared to wrestle until midway through January after suffering two broken fingers and a broken toe.

Carlile said he used that time to watch and learn.

Well, he learned a lot by using a pair of big wins to secure his spot. Carlile pinned Marion Center’s Griffin Tinsman in 2:49 to reach the consolation quarterfinals.

He then topped United’s Jacob Sombronski, 2-1, like he did in the District 6 tournament, to punch his ticket to Hershey.

“It felt good. I was ready for it. I’m looking forward to the moments of wrestling where you just have fun,” Carlile said. “I go out there, try to learn and get better. It’s a game, so just go out there and have fun.”

Friday’s action

The Rams didn’t have quite the day they had hoped for.

All nine wrestlers started in the second round with only two making the quarterfinals.

“It was a pretty rough day. We were kind of flat as a team. I think top to bottom, just not enough urgency,” Penns Valley coach Joel Brinker said.

Shunk and Watson made the quarterfinals, advancing to secure PIAA spots.

Shunk had a dominating 7-1 performance against a tough opponent in Indiana’s Carter Putt. He then hung on for a 4-3 victory over Montour’s Anthony Orlandini.

Watson opened by pinning Burrell’s Ben Catullo in 1:13. He took out the District 7 champion in Burgettstown’s Rudy Brown, 3-1, to setup a rematch with District 6 foe in Penn Cambria’s Trent Hoover.

Hoover has beaten Watson twice this year already.

“Colten and Ty, they’re very consistent with how they train and warm up. They’re getting rewarded for it,” Brinker said. “They are our constant, and lead by example, so proud of those two for punching their ticket.”

Six of those seven wrestlers who fell in their opening round are still alive in the consolation bracket. Unfortunately, the Rams were the only team to lose a wrestler on the first day.

“If your goal is just to get here, you’re going to be in trouble. I think maybe some of that, kids were just happy getting here,” Brinker said. “I think they wanted more, but you just got to show up (Saturday) and battle like it’s your last match for the season. (We got to show) more urgency, so let’s just go and see what happens, and do your best.”

Philipsburg-Osceola

Champions: None

State qualifiers: Caleb Hummel (4th, 107 pounds), Marcus Gable (4th, 139)

Eliminated: Nate Fleck (1-2, 145 pounds)

Recap: After the Mounties had Hummel and Gable secure their spots to Hershey on Friday night, it was just a matter of where would they finish the regional tournament.

They each suffered tough losses in the semifinals.

Hummel was shut out by Deputy, who was a PIAA runnerup last year, 6-0. Gable came up just short against Burrell’s Cooper Hornack, who was a PIAA Champion last year, 4-2.

They each rebounded to make the consolation finals.

Hummel topped Tussey Mountain’s Dakota Santamaria, 3-1. However, he fell to Baker, 9-3.

“I definitely could’ve done a lot better in my semis match and (consolation finals) match. I need to get better on top and scoring more off the bottom as well,” Hummel said of tournament and the future. “It’s going to be a lot more fun having a teammate along than it was by myself.”

Gable shut out Elizabeth Forward’s Lucas Boyer, 3-0. In the consolation finals, the senior fell to Burgettstown’s Gaven Suica, who is a three-time PIAA qualifier, 4-2.

“It’s really good to be able to get back to states after not being there for two years,” Gable said. “There are a few things that need tweaked on, but I feel pretty good.”

Friday’s action

The Mounties have all three of their wrestlers still alive, which coach Justin Fye was pleased with.

Two of them have already secured spots in Hershey.

Hummel was first since he’s the lightest wrestler for P-O. He had no problems in a 12-2 major decision over Burgettstown’s Darius Simmons.

In the quarterfinals, Hummel was able to avenge a loss against Quaker Valley’s Bruce Anderchak. The Mounties wrestler used a late third-period takedown to earn a 2-1 win.

“Caleb dominated his first match. The second match, the kid was good. We lost to him here last year,” Fye said. “Caleb didn’t panic. He kept wrestling that whole match. He dictated a lot of that match.”

Gable recorded bonus points in both of his matches in his final regional tournament.

He opened by pinning Belle Vernon’s Giovanni Weightman in 5:08. The Millersville commit followed by shutting out Quaker Valley’s Matthew Danna, 10-0, for Gable’s first trip back to Hershey since his freshman season.

“Marcus looked great in two matches. I mean total control both matches against two pretty good kids. That match there (quarterfinals), we dominated the whole match,” Fye said. “Hopefully, that’s confidence going into (Saturday). We’re going to have a good semifinal match. He’s been in that position to go two years in a row and just came up short, so that’s a little weight off the shoulders.”

Fleck had just one match on the day, which was against the District 7 runner-up in Montour’s Rook Smith.

Smith kept Fleck off the board in a 5-0 victory.

“I want him to get his offense a little bit more. I’m hoping (Saturday) in his first match he gets his offense going a little bit,” Fye said. “We have a rematch (Saturday). We wrestled that kid earlier this year. We’re going to come back and take it one match at a time.”

State qualifiers: Ezra Swisher (3rd, 139 pounds)

Other placewinners: Jackson Long (7th, 152 pounds)

Eliminated: Wyatt Long (1-2, 107 pounds), Cameron Garcia (1-2, 127), Noah Weaver (1-2, 145)

Recap:The Red Raiders had five guys alive on Saturday.

When it all got settled, they came away with only one qualifier in Swisher.

He was kicked into the consolation bracket after suffering a tough 7-3 quarterfinals loss to Hornack in sudden victory. It was a match that Swisher rallied back to force the extra period of wrestling.

He didn’t stay down though as he pinned his way to the consolation quarterfinals. Swisher took out Tyrone’s Remington Fleck in 4:23 to secure his first PIAA appearance.

After suffering a 13-3 loss to Suica, Swisher was able to rally back and end his tournament on a high note with a 4-2 win over Boyer.

“It’s a big deal to me. It really hasn’t sunk in,” Swisher said. “It’s been my goal for two years, so I’m really super pumped about it.”

Friday’s action

The Red Raiders’ Wyatt Long, Swisher and Weaver reached the quarterfinals.

However, all three suffered losses to some high-caliber wrestlers.

“This level you’re going to get the very best. The Southwest region is brutal,” Bellefonte coach Mike Maney said. “(Wyatt) Long had to wrestle the best guy in the state. Swisher had an overtime loss to a returning state champ.”

Wyatt Long had no problems in his regional opener. He needed just 22 seconds to take care of North Catholic’s Victor Wagner. Then Long was shut out by Chestnut Ridge’s Dominic Deputy, who was a PIAA runner-up last year, 17-0, in 5:14.

Swisher and Weaver opened with one-point victories.

In the quarterfinals, Swisher took on Burrell’s Cooper Hornack, who looked like he was going to make the semifinals with a two-point win. Swisher had other ideas and snapped off a takedown late in the third period to force sudden victory at 3-3.

In the sudden victory period, Hornack looked to jump the whistle, taking Swisher down and to his back for nearfall points and a 7-3 victory.

Weaver was shut out by Bentworth’s Owen Ivcic, who was a PIAA qualifier last year, 7-0, to be sent to the consolation bracket.

Jackson Long, who finished seventh at districts, was able to make the regional tournament as he took Bennett’s spot.

He along with Garcia were sent to the consolation bracket with losses in the second round.

“Everyone is moving on to (Saturday), so that’s one goal. We just got to regroup, mentally prepare ourselves and be ready to wrestle five hard minutes,” Maney said. “A lot of times it’s not the best guy that wins, it’s the guy that gets momentum going and wants it a little bit more.”

5 Centre County girls continue to make history with PIAA spots

This year has been a year of firsts for girls wrestling.

BEA and P-O took part in the first all girls dual in January. Last week, the Lady Eagles’ Angie Grieb and the Lady Mounties’ Isabella DuVall each secured the first district crowns.

On Saturday, Grieb and DuVall along with two of Grieb’s teammates, Eden Eveleth and Grace Crestani, and State College’s Anna Lackey became the first wrestlers to earn trips to the PIAA Championships next week in Hershey after finishing in the top four of their weights in the Central Regional Championships at Milton High School.

Lackey was the highest finisher as she made the finals at 106 pounds.

After pinning her way to the semifinals, Lackey edged Eveleth, 4-1, to make the finals. The Lady Little Lions wrestler was pinned by Northern Bedford’s Kaylee Ebersole in 1:12.

“I had no doubt that she’d make it to states and the finals. What I noticed in this tournament, she did really well taking her time and being patient,” State College coach Eshia Willingham said. “She honed in and did what she knows, she didn’t get fancy. I tell her, ‘(You have) Six minutes you have, no need to rush.’”

Eveleth used a pair of bonus point victories to set up that semifinals match with Lackey.

She opened by pinning Bellwood-Antis’ Hailey Loupe in 1:00. Eveleth then upset the No. 2 seed in Montgomery’s Sadie Wagner, 12-3.

After the loss to Lackey, the Lady Eagles wrestler used a pair of 3-0 victories to finish third.

“It’s really an honor. It’s really cool to see so many girls wrestling now. To have the opportunity to go to states with the boys,” Eveleth said, “I’m really excited for that. I worked hard to make that happen, so I’m excited to see how far I can go.”

Grieb and Crestani each finished third as well.

Grieb, who placed fourth last year in the girls state championships, was the No. 2 seed and opened with a pin of Jersey Shore’s Addison Dangle in 32 seconds. She was kicked to the consolation bracket after being pinned by Lake Lehman’s Alahna Morris in 2:50.

Grieb then pinned her way through the rest of the tournament.

“I’m very proud of the way we wrestled and totally excited to see how this goes. I’m very happy to make it to states. My main goal wasn’t to go for first,” Grieb said. “My main goal was to make it to states, so I could put all my effort into it. It was exhilarating when I got into the (consolation finals).”

Crestani was able to secure her third straight appearance in the state championships, but this is the first one to be sanctioned by the PIAA.

She received a forfeit in the first round, and suffered a 5-3 loss in the quarterfinals. Crestani had four matches in the consolation bracket, which she earned pins in all of them for her third place finish.

“It’s exciting, there is no other feeling. I was definitely nervous,” Crestani said. “The last match was definitely nerve wracking, knowing that even if I didn’t take third, I’m still going, but if I take third, I’ll have better seeding.”

DuVall had four teammates with her in the regional tournament, but she was the only one to come away with a PIAA spot.

She had a bye to the quarterfinals as the No. 2 seed, however DuVall was upset by Athens’ Hannah Rathbun, who went on to finish second, 6-2.

DuVall used that loss as fuel to pin her way to the consolation finals. She came up a point shy of recording a major decision in a 10-3 win over Benton’s Callie Hess to finish third.

“She got off to a slow start, and took a tough loss early. We went back and talked about it,” Lady Mounties’ coach Chris McCully said. “She came back and wrestled real well throughout the consolation bracket. She’s excited to represent at Hershey and get a chance to get that PIAA medal.”
