6.5 million pounds of beef recalled after 57 sickened by salmonella outbreak
An Arizona company is recalling over 6.5 million pounds of beef products due to possible salmonella contamination, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) said on Thursday.
JBS Tolleson company is recalling a slew of raw products, including ground beef, that were packaged between July 26, 2018, and Sept. 7, 2018, and bear the code “EST. 267” inside the USDA mark of inspection.
The tainted products were shipped to retail locations and institutions nationwide and have been linked to at least 57 illnesses across 16 states, according to FSIS.
Common symptoms of a salmonella infection typically appear within 12 to 72 hours after exposure to the bacteria and may include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever. Though most people recover without treatment, older adults and young children may require hospitalization.
FSIS says it is concerned that some consumers may still have the tainted products in their freezers and cautions that anyone who purchased the beef throw it away immediately or return to the place of purchase.
