Responding officers found a woman inside the residence who was unresponsive with multiple gunshot wounds. Officers observed a suspect vehicle driving away from the scene and followed it onto I-580 westbound.

An unmarked Pleasanton PD patrol unit followed the vehicle until it became disabled in the area of I-580 and Benedict Drive in San Leandro. Partner agencies including the California Highway Patrol, San Leandro Police Department and Alameda County Sheriff’s Office responded to assist.

While attempting to communicate with the suspect, officers noticed there was no movement inside the vehicle. Officers approached and discovered the driver was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Police called it an isolated incident and said there was “no danger” to the community.

Westbound and eastbound lanes on I-580 were shut down following the incident in the area of the 164th Avenue exit and eastbound lanes at the 150th Avenue exit.

As of Thursday night, all lanes have reopened.
