I-55 bridge at Memphis to close 2 weeks for construction

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Interstate 55 bridge connecting Tennessee and Arkansas will close for two weeks for a construction project.

The Memphis & Arkansas Bridge, the older of two bridges that span the Mississippi River in Memphis, will close at 8 p.m. Sunday, March 10 until 8 p.m. Sunday, March 24.

Southbound I-55 will be closed at Bridgeport Road in Arkansas. Northbound I-55 will close at South Parkway. Westbound Crump Boulevard also will be closed. Detours will be posted.

Crews have been working for months on a new interchange connecting I-55 to the bridge and to Crump Boulevard on the Memphis side. The closure will allow that work to continue.

Meanwhile crews will “hydrodemolition the bridge deck and provide a new concrete polymer overlay,” the Tennessee Department of Transportation said.

The schedule of the work will depend on the weather.
