5 Trump ‘Lies’ From Comey Hearing – and 1 Truth (Video)

James Comey laid into President Trump during his highly-anticipated testimony before Congress Thursday, calling the president a liar twice in just the first hour of his testimony.

In dramatic testimony, Comey said he could not trust Trump to tell the truth, leading him to take unusual steps to document their interactions.

Here are all the president’s lies — and one truth — according to Comey:

1. Right of out of the gate, Comey made it clear that Trump’s assertion that the president had lost the confidence of the bureau’s rank and file was hogwash, insisting that Trump had repeatedly told him he was doing a good job as FBI director.

“The administration then chose to defame me and more importantly the FBI by saying that the organization was in disarray,” Comey said. “That it was poorly led. That the workforce had lost confidence in its leader. Those were lies, plain and simple.”

2. Comey also told the Senate Intelligence Committee that he felt the need to document his meetings with Trump because he believed the president might lie about what was discussed.

“I was honestly concerned he might lie about the nature of our meeting, and so I thought it really important to document,” he told Congress.

3. Comey denied he was the one who asked Trump to dinner, as Trump told NBC.

According to Comey, Trump called him on the day they had dinner and asked if he would be free that night . The president said he would have liked to have invited Comey’s whole family, but promised to do that next time.

But in an interview with NBC News Trump said the dinner came about because the former FBI director requested it.

4. Comey also disputed Trump’s claim that never asked Comey to drop his investigation into former national security advisor, Michael Flynn. According to Comey, Trump ordered him to drop the probe when they spoke in February.

“I took it as a direction,” Comey told the Senate. “I mean, this is a president of the United States with me alone saying, ‘I hope this.’ I took it as, this is what he wants me to do. I didn’t obey that, but that’s the way I took it.”

When Florida Sen. Marco Rubio asked if he considered it a “order” to drop the investigation, Comey said yes.

5. Maine Sen. Angus King asked Comey whether Trump’s repeated claims that Comey reached out to him over the phone were accurate.

“In that same [NBC] interview, the president said, ‘In one case I called him and in one case, he called me.’ Is that an accurate statement?” King asked.

Comey’s answer: “I never initiated a communication with the president.”

Trump did have one truthy moment… Comey confirmed that he did, in fact, assure Trump that the president was not under investigation three times. Though this brings up another issue: Was it appropriate for Trump to ask the question? And, perhaps equally compelling: Was it appropriate for Comey to answer?
