5-year-old girl shot and killed in parked car on Near West Side early Sunday morning; police continue investigation

CHICAGO — Police continue to investigate the shooting that killed a 5-year-old girl inside a parked car early Sunday morning in the United Center neighborhood on the city’s Near West Side.

According to Chicago police, a group of people were standing outside in the 200 block of North Campbell Avenue around 3:30 a.m. Sunday when shots were fired. The 5-year-old girl, who police say was in a parked vehicle, was shot in the upper left abdomen and transported to an area hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

The Cook County Medical Examiner later identified the victim as Reig Ware.

“It’s difficult to handle. It’s difficult for our responding officers,” CPD 8th District Cmndr. Bryan Spreyne said. “That’s somebody’s child, brother, sister, cousin.”

Additionally, police say, a 24-year-old man who had been standing outside was shot twice in the upper left thigh and taken to an area hospital in good condition.

Police say nobody is in custody and no further injuries have been reported.

“It’s absolutely tragic and heartbreaking,” 13th Ward Ald. Marty Quinn said. “As a father of three daughters, it breaks my heart that we continue to see this narrative play out in our city.”
