The district said five teachers were chosen “based on their track record of successful student growth and classroom observations of their effectiveness in teaching and learning.”

According to a release, Lauren Kirk, Lauren Weaver, Lindsey McMurrey, Jenni Griffith and Melanie King will receive TIA designations. Cindy Hathorn, who was designated last year, will reportedly receive a higher designation this year.

The TIA program was created to provide incentives for most effective teachers working in high-needs schools or teaching high-needs subject areas. The TIA designations provide teachers with additional compensation from $3,000 to over $20,000 per year for their performance, the school said which will serve as an incentive to continue their dedication to students.

“Once again, we are extremely proud of the work our teachers do every day,” Superintendent Dr. Thurston Lamb said. “Teachers who are successful at this level are driven by a deep passion for helping all students. But it’s exciting to finally see these teachers rewarded for their efforts through the TIA program at a level which is more representative of their talents and expertise.”

All HISD’s TIA recipients and the Teacher of the Year will be honored in the district’s annual “Teachers of Excellence Gala” held in May.
