5 Gut-Wrenching Moments From The ‘This Is Us’ Midseason Finale
Everything finally came together during the Tuesday’s midseason finale of NBC’s “This is Us.” Episode 10 made several heartbreaking revelations about Kate and Rebecca’s relationship, the fate of Dr. K, and William’s personal life — most of which viewers have been waiting all season to figure out.
The episode — titled “Last Christmas” — took place around Christmas. Kate (Chrissy Metz) was in town to spend the holidays with her family, all of whom gathered at Randall’s (Sterling K. Brown). In addition to having wanted to visit her two brothers and mother Rebecca (Mandy Moore), Kate was scheduled to undergo Gastric Bypass surgery in the hopes that it would speed up her weight loss process. A consultation with her doctor for the surgery revealed that she had been taking Prozac to treat depression, which was news to her mom. The pair had a discussion that showed fans just how deep issues run in this family, as Rebecca questioned her role in Kate’s mental anguish.
“Did I do this? I did. Didn’t I?” she asked her only daughter.
Viewers also caught up with Dr. K (Gerald McRaney) — the doctor who birthed Kevin, Kate and their brother who died— during the show. In a flashback sequence, Jack (Milo Ventimiglia) and Rebecca found themselves at the hospital for an emergency with Kate. It is revealed to them that Dr. K was dying from internal bleeding and was in the hospital alone. This struck a chord with Jack and Rebecca, who decided to stay by his side.
The moment was made that much more heartbreaking when a young Randall entered the room. He gifted the doctor with a snow globe as a token of his appreciation. Randall thanked Dr. K for helping his parents to adopt him following the death of the third triplet.

Kevin Finally Found His Passion — And (Maybe) Love, Too:
After striking out big time with Olivia (Janet Montgomery) during Season 1, episode 9, Kevin was on to new prospects. During the midseason finale he was invited to celebrate Chanukah with Sloane (Milana Vayntrub) and her family. Although the two were not dating going into the gathering, it seems love is on the horizon. Kevin listened to his potential girlfriend deliver a passionate speech during the meal, which inspired him both personally and professionally.
With Olivia among the missing, producers decided to cancel the play they were working on — but Kevin’s not ready to call it quits just yet. He opened up to Sloane during the finale, telling her he was willing to fund the play himself. Could it be that Kevin has finally found both a career and woman that he loves? Only time will tell.
William Left A Lover Behind When He Moved In With Randall:
During episode 10 fans were introduced to Jesse (Denis O’Hare). In the finale, he and William reunited for the first time, which left viewers in tears. Jesse delivered a speech about William’s disappearance during Narcotics Anonymous, telling attendees that having lost his lover pushed him to turn back to drugs. Despite having felt abandoned, Jesse wanted nothing more than to spend William’s final days by his side.
“William Hill, I loved you and you left. Now I’d like to spend whatever time you have remaining together,” he said.
Talk about a tearjerker!

Dr. K’s Fate Was Revealed:
Viewers first saw Dr. K in the hospital during a flashback. They saw him once again later in the episode in another, during which he woke up after a surgical procedure. Dr. K was as shocked as many watching “This is Us” to find that he had survived and was going to live a little longer.
Randall Convinced A Friend Not To Commit Suicide On Christmas Eve:
During an office Christmas party, Randall confronted a friend named Andy — played by “Westworld” star Jimmi Simpson. His co-worker was contemplating jumping from the building that night, but was stopped in his tracks by Randall. The father of two reminded Andy that his daughter was waiting for him at home, which got him thinking about all the reasons he had to live. Andy decided not to kill himself, which prompted Randall to repeat a phrase first uttered by his mother during the midseason finale — “Nothing bad happens on Christmas Eve.”
Toby Showed Up At Randall’s House On Christmas:
Kate decided she was done with Toby (Chris Sullivan) in the episode prior, but he wasn’t ready to give up. He showed up at the family home on Christmas, which was enough to have “This is Us” viewers reaching for the tissues. The moment became all the more cry-worthy when Toby collapsed on the ground after forming a bond with members of Kate’s family. Beth (Susan Kelechi Watson) urged someone to call 911, but the episode came to a close before anything more was revealed.
It is not yet know when “This is Us” will return for more episodes on NBC.
