India’s national animal is also an endangered one. The good news, of course, is that the number of tigers is on the increase. India is home to most of the tiger population and with concerted efforts by the government as well as some great work by the NGOs, the numbers have gone up considerably. Just ten years ago, in 2006, the tiger population in India was just 1,411. Cut to 2014 when the numbers were up to 2,226. By some estimates India is now home to 2500 tigers.
