4th season of dredging starts on Hudson River

FORT EDWARD, N.Y. (AP) -- Dredging is getting underway again in the massive PCB cleanup project on the upper Hudson River.

Judith Enck, regional administrator for the Environmental Protection Agency, will be in Fort Edward at noon on Monday to discuss the start of the fourth season of dredging.

General Electric Co. released poly-chlorinated biphenyls, or PCBs, into the river decades ago, and is dredging the river north of Albany as part of a federal Superfund project. The cleanup is expected to cost more than $1 billion.

The EPA says it's almost half way to its goal of removing 2.65 million cubic yards of contaminated sediment from a 40-mile stretch of the upper Hudson.
