$49.9 billion of U.S. aid will be spent on defense - Ukrainian PM

Out of almost $61 billion of U.S. aid, $49.9 billion will be designated for defense spending, Ukraine's Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal said on Telegram on April 20.

Shmyhal expressed gratitude towards U.S. lawmakers and the American public for their unwavering support, highlighting that the aid package also includes $7.8 billion for potential budget support, $1.57 billion for economic assistance, and $400 million dedicated to border protection and humanitarian demining.

The Prime Minister also anticipates the Senate will pass the bill shortly, which he believes will significantly boost Ukraine's defense capabilities, including the provision of long-range and air defense systems. Additionally, the funds are expected to fortify macro-financial stability, particularly in financing essential budget expenditures, and facilitate the rapid recovery of critical infrastructure.

"The United States has once again demonstrated leadership and determination to fight for peace, security and a better future for Ukraine, Europe and the world," Shmyhal wrote.

The bill, numbered 8035 and spearheaded by House Speaker Mike Johnson's team, garnered the support of 311 congressmen, with 112 opposing and one abstaining. For the legislation to take effect, it must be ratified by the Senate and signed into law by the U.S. President.
