40 Volunteer First Responders Rush to Save Horses Trapped in Mud in Connecticut

On Saturday the Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department in Connecticut received a call that two horses were stuck in the mud behind a farm in a swampy area.

These wonderful first responders came to the rescue of the horses and  spent around five hours getting these animals free!

The Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department posted in part, "DART arrived and went to work setting up their Sled equipment. The goal was to roll the horses out of the mud, which was waist deep for rescuers, onto their sled device. Once on the sled all personnel would work together to pull them over the make shift bridge and up onto flat ground approx. 30 yards from the swamp. North Windham Rescue 102 was requested to the scene to assist with setting up dual rope systems, as the 2nd horse was considerably more stuck in the mud than the first. Those systems were ultimately not needed in the end but the significant manpower was necessary."

People on Facebook are so proud of these amazing heroes who worked so tirelessly to save these beautiful animals. One person commented, "Amazing humans helping ones that can’t help themselves ! Are we Blessed or What? Having so many people who care for people and animals alike that they come when needed without question." Another replied, "Amazing work guys and girls!! So glad these horses had everyone working as a team to rescue them." Someone else said, "Outstanding work and coordination by the "6 house" with the mutual aid partners and other community members and organizations involved."

The fire department also said that "At 1821 both horses had been warmed up enough to stand and we are happy to report both got up without issue and were happily eating some fresh hay."

What an incredible rescue!

What Is DART?

In the above post the amazing Lebanon Volunteer Fire Department said they were aided by DART, the Disaster Assistance Response Team. According to their website, DART was established in 1989, and it is a not-for profit organization dedicated to helping individuals, families and communities across the United States affected by natural and man-made disasters. Through a partnership between the New York City Fire Department and the American Red Cross in Greater New York, DART rapidly deploys highly trained teams to impacted areas, distributing emergency relief supplies, assessing damaged areas and assists with coordination between local, state and national agencies.

The website also states that D.A.R.T. members include active and retired firefighters of the F.D.N.Y whom in addition to extensive fire / rescue experience also receive training from the American Red Cross in areas such as Logistics, Bulk Distribution, Disaster Assessment and Government Liaison Operations.

What an absolutely amazing organization and it's so wonderful they are there to help when people need it most.
