In a statement to parents obtained by NBC affiliate WPTV, Principal Latricia Stubbs said the students were taken to the hospital “out of an abundance of caution.”

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), THC can be impairing or mind-altering. Consuming high dosages of THC can have delayed effects, leading to a higher risk of overdose or poisoning.

Today (Thursday), our school resource deputy, in conjunction with the Sheriff’s Office and school security, investigated an isolated incident involving 4 students suspected of ingesting gummies that may have contained THC. Out of an abundance of caution, those students were transported to a local hospital to receive medical attention.  Any student who distributes, possesses, or is caught in the act of using, admits to use, or is discovered to have used drugs, narcotics, or controlled substances in the course of an investigation will receive consequences outlined in the Student Code of Conduct. Consequences can include suspension, expulsion, and/or arrest. All variables are considered before determining final disciplinary actions pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

As parents, you can help. Please take this opportunity to speak with your child about not accepting or ingesting anything given to them by someone else. We want to encourage students to feel comfortable reporting any information they may have that compromises their safety and the safety of others. When students see something and say something it helps to keep everyone safe. Working together we can maintain an environment where students are free to focus on learning.
