3rd Young Filmmakers Workshop announces mentors

21 Jul - The mentor lineup for Young Filmmakers Workshop (YFW) 2017 was recently announced and it was revealed that a total of four prolific Southeast Asian filmmakers will be contributing as mentors during the workshop.
Each of the four mentors will focus on a specific aspect of filmmaking.
The production aspect will be handled by Anocha Suwichakornpong, a film director and producer from Thailand.
"I very much look forward to sharing my experience as an independent filmmaker with the young talents in Malaysia beginning their journey," said Suwichakornpong in a quote, as posted on FINAS Malaysia's official Facebook.
The Thai filmmaker has two successful feature films under her belt, "Mundane History" and "By the Time It Gets Dark", the latter which premiered in International Competition at Locarno and has been sold to the UK, U.S., Canada, and France. Films she has produced includes "Concrete Clouds" and "How to Win at Checkers (Every Time)".
French-Cambodian filmmaker Davy Chou will be the directing mentor. His first feature film, "Diamond Island", won him the SACD award at Cannes' Critics' Week. He also directed a feature-length documentary, "Golden Slumbers" (selected for Busan International Film Festival 2011 and Forum of Berlin International Film Festival 2012, among others), and produced films including Thai director Nontawat Numbenchapol's "Boundary", French director Jacky Goldberg's "This is Comedy" and Italian director Irene Dionisio's "Shores – In the Safe Northern Sun".

"I'm honored and humbled to accompany the participants of the Young Filmmakers Workshop as a directing mentor. I'm excited to meet them in Kuala Lumpur soon and I am committed to sharing my experience, exchanging views and supporting them in fully developing their visions," said Chou.
YFW 2017's cinematography mentor is Sidi Salleh, who hails from Indonesia and has been active in the film industry since the early 2000s. He starts out as a cinematographer for films such as "Blind Pig Who Wants to Fly", "Postcard from the Zoo" and "Kara - the Daughter of a Tree", before forging a career as a director with his directorial debut, 2011's "Full Moon".
Last but not least is the editing mentor, Carlo Francisco Manatad from the Philippines. Based in Manila, Manatad has edited more than 40 feature films that has screened in both local and international film festivals. He has also worked on his own short films which have gone on to various prestigious film festivals across the globe. He is currently working on his first feature film, "Whether the Weather is Fine", which follows the aftermath in his hometown, Tacloban, after Typhoon Haiyan.
YFW 2017 is happening from 19 to 26 August in Kuala Lumpur.
Selected participants will attend the in-depth 9-day training and two of the most promising participants from the workshop will represent Malaysia at the upcoming ASEAN-Republic Of Korea Film Leaders Incubator: FLY 2017 program.
FLY 2017, which aims to nurture future leaders of the Asian film industry by discovering aspiring talents from 10 ASEAN countries and Korea, will be held in Indonesia from 20 November to 3 December 2017.
