$30K cigarette heist being investigated by Palo Alto PD

(KRON) — The Palo Alto Police Department is looking for three suspects who allegedly stole $30,000 worth of cigarettes from the back of a semi-trailer truck on Thursday. Palo Alto PD dispatch got a call at around 7:38 a.m. Thursday reporting an alarm at Palo Alto Shell at 2200 El Camino Real.

Officers arrived on scene to learn that a delivery company employee had activated the alarm following a robbery. An investigation revealed that two victims — a man in his fifties and a man in his forties — had been making a delivery in a 53-foot semi-trailer.

They arrived at the Shell station to make a delivery. The younger victim went inside the station to get paperwork signed. The older victim was in the back of the trailer working when they heard footsteps inside the trailer.

According to police, he turned around to find two suspects, one of whom reached for a bulge in his waistband and warned the victim. The victim assumed the suspect was armed, although he did not see a weapon.

The two suspects then proceeded to cut the wrapping off a pallet and passed several tote boxes of cigarettes to a third suspect. The third suspect dumped the cigarettes out of the boxes and into a vehicle.

All three suspects then got into the vehicle, police said, and fled west on College Avenue. It was estimated that they got away with $30,000 worth of cigarettes.

Police describe the suspects as men in their twenties, wearing dark clothes with ski masks covering their faces. The suspect vehicle was described by the victims as a newer SUV. The incident remains under active investigation by Palo Alto PD.
