$30 million in budget cuts likely coming to PPS in 2024-25

PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — Portland Public Schools Superintendent Guadalupe Guerrero revealed there could likely be $30 million of budget cuts next year.

The superintendent of Oregon’s largest school district has been talking about the need to make cuts for some time. Now the district is starting to move a plan forward.

Guerrero said the district plans to reduce the central administrative office by $15 million. Another $15 million would come out of schools’ operating budgets. He indicated that will mean larger class sizes — on average, an increase by one or two students.

Guerrero made this announcement three days before stepping down from his role.

KOIN 6 News asked if they would close any schools and PPS replied in writing that it was not a consideration at this time.

As for the teacher and staff raises that came out of the strike, the district said the shortfall would have been $40 million over 3 years — not $30 million for just next year.

In response to the proposed cuts, the Oregon Education Association released the following statement to KOIN 6 News on behalf of the Portland Association of Teachers:

“District administrators have already cut support in our schools and classrooms to the bone, and if new cuts need to be made, they must be made as far from students as possible. That means finding savings in administration, purchased services, and other non-student areas of the budget and working with educators to fight for additional school funding in Salem”

Though people on all sides of the issue seem to agree that getting more money allocated to the school district from state lawmakers is the answer to solving these budget woes, that possibility doesn’t look likely right now.

More information about the possible cuts is expected to surface Thursday night when the PPS Community Budget Review Committee meets and will be discussing this.
