3 Things the 49ers Should Do During the Bye Week

Mercifully, and as if on cue, the 49ers find themselves in the midst of their bye week, and it couldn’t come at a better time. In the midst of a very bad season, and playing what some have referred to as “historically bad” football, Chip Kelly and his team are back at the drawing board and scrambling for answers.

There are some things Kelly and the 49ers can do to help themselves. Maybe with the time off, and some time to breathe, this team can find a baseline to begin making the long hard climb up the mountain.

1- Let “Chip and Kap” be “Chip and Kap”.

This isn’t a hard one. Does anyone believe EITHER will be in San Francisco next year? Colin Kaepernick has always been best when he gets outside the pocket and operates. If I’m Chip Kelly, I call Jim Harbaugh in Ann Arbor this week and pick his brain. Why? It’s when Kaepernick was at his best.

If these two can tweak what works best for him at quarterback within the current game plan, perhaps they can stem the tide of coming losses. No one really knows whether Kaepernick at quarterback is akin to pumping a dry well, but Chip is finding out. With wholesale changes coming, now is the time to step outside of the box and see what else is possible.

2- they need defensive changes.

The defense is a disaster, and not a lot will change in two weeks or the next two months. In San Francisco, the dye is cast on that side of the ball, but if change for the sake of change is possible, options should be considered. I don’t think you jettison Jim O’Neil, but they need to get creative; NOW.

3- Fire General Manager Trent Baalke.

Yes, it’s time. The writing’s on the wall. Fan apathy has set in, and as losses mount, the same will on a roster that will be gutted in 2017.

Jed York needs to begin the process of reclaiming some dignity for what has become a laughing stock in the NFL. He also needs to demonstrate some goodwill with the fans who have stopped showing up at Levi. By every metric, Baalke has become the face of this team. HE’S know also the face of a franchise in free fall. HE’S the face of ineptitude and dysfunction.

He also needs to go. York is playing a game of chicken with his 49ers fan base, and if he doesn’t start getting that, the dire straits are likely to continue. It’s his call now.

He needs to take caution.

He also needs to take action.
