According to a state police accident report, their death was the result of a box truck driver falling asleep at the wheel. The 24-year-old driver's truck then struck a construction vehicle in an active work construction zone. The impact caused the truck to roll onto the shoulder of the highway where the three men were working, police said.

A memorial for Philson Hinebaugh III, Robert Hampe and Jesse McKenzie was placed next to the southbound lanes of Interstate 83 around mile marker 35.5 on April 25 where the construction workers died eight days earlier in Fairview Township.
