3 Shot Dead At Great Lakes Dragaway In Kenosha County

A shotgun cartridge is loaded during a shoot on Lofthouse Moor in North Yorkshire as the Glorious 12th, the official start of the grouse shooting season, gets underway.

Three people were shot dead at the Great Lakes Dragaway in Kenosha County, Wisconsin, on Sunday after a gunman approached them and fired shots from a short distance, it was reported. While two of them died on the spot, one died on his way to the hospital. The incident took place at around 8 p.m. EDT.

According to a Fox6 Now report, the shooting took place at the Larry's Fun Fest event. The victims were from Aurora, Illinois, Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth said.

Speaking about the incident, Beth said a suspect approached the victims while they were standing near a food vendor and shot at point blank range.

Minutes after the incident, law enforcement agency received a number of calls asking for help. However, by the time they reached the spot, the three had been shot, WISN Channel 12 reported.

The suspect, believed to be in the 20s, has not been caught. It was unclear if he left the scene immediately after the attack or was hiding nearby.

"We don't know if he's still here," Beth said according to reports. The suspect was wearing a black hoodie and blue jeans shorts, reports said.

"There's no positive ID on the suspect right now, we don't know the motive, we're not aware of any altercations that happened earlier, at this point the detectives I've talked to are not aware of what caused this," Beth told a local news website.

While friends of the victims were in shock after the event, they had no idea what would have led to the incident, police said. According to some reports, the police were also looking into the possibility of a gang rivalry.

Kenosha County's Sheriff Sgt. Mark Malecki, in a press release, said the situation was "fluid."

"I'm thinking this was a mass exodus, though I can't say for sure. It didn't take us long to get everybody to leave," Malecki said. According to a local report, the police had not confirmed the type of weapon used in the attack.

Around 5,000 people were present at Larry’s Fun Fest at the time of the incident. The fest has attracted thousands of people from surrounding areas like Milwaukee and Chicago in the past.

"This is not indicative of this crowd. This is isolated and this is somebody who had a grudge with somebody and they came here and they really ruined a family event for people," Brian Mitchell, Great Lakes Dragaway volunteer told Fox6 Now.

Police said the investigation was ongoing and the area was evacuated soon after the incident. They have asked people to keep away from the area.

Gun violence has become a serious concern for the U.S. in the recent years. An analysis of firearm deaths in the U.S. revealed that on an average three children die of gunshot wounds in the country every day. The analysis also revealed that gunshots are the third leading cause of death among children aged 1 to 17 years.
