3 plead guilty in alleged scheme to fix University of San Diego basketball game
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- Federal prosecutors say a 28-year-old sports bookmaker has been sentenced to 2½ years in prison and three years' probation for his role in a scheme to fix University of San Diego basketball games.
A U.S. attorney's statement says Paul Thweni received the sentence Thursday after pleading guilty in August. He could have gotten up to five years in prison.
Thweni was among 10 people charged with running a sports betting business to fix West Coast Conference games. The others included Brandon Johnson, the school's all-time leading scorer, former coach T.J. Brown and former player Brandon Dowdy.
In his plea agreement, Thweni admitted that he and his co-conspirators placed Las Vegas casino bets on a 2010 game after bribing Johnson to influence the score.
