3 Players to Watch in Cowboys Camp

1.Anthony Hitchens

Hitchens will be forced to step up with the suspensions of Rolando McClain and Randy Gregory. At just 24-years-old, the 2014 fourth-round pick has good upside. He will have every chance to earn a bigger role long-term if he can shine early in the season. His versatility to play inside or outside linebacker is something that defensive coordinator Rod Marinelli loves and can help his chances of contributing. Hitchens’ size is probably more ideal for the outside linebacker position, but without McClain, he may have to man the mike linebacker spot temporarily. Hitchens has unquestionably improved during his two years in the league, but will it be enough to progress into a long-term answer for the Cowboys? We will have to wait and see.

2. Dak Prescott

Prescott is a no-brainer, even if fans are hoping he doesn’t see a snap during the regular season. The potential future quarterback of America’s team is something fans will be watching closely. Did the Cowboys find their version of Russell Wilson? Many assume the Cowboys will make the Playoffs next year, but most of the time when you hear that sentence, it has a big “IF” in it, regarding the health of Tony Romo. If Romo does miss some amount of time, Prescott could be an upgrade over what the Cowboys have had at backup quarterback in recent years. Even if Kellen Moore is the preferred backup by offensive coordinator Scott Linehan, Jerry Jones has a way of meddling in these things. Prescott’s performance in the Preseason is likely to cause a lot of overreaction whichever way it goes.

3. Ezekiel Elliott

Elliott has had Cowboys fans salivating since the minute he was drafted 4th-overall in the Draft. Assuming charges don’t come from the recent domestic violent controversy, Elliott should be on track to be the starting running back. Especially with McFadden injuring his elbow and Morris expected to be used in a more complementary role. Elliott is the early odds-on favorite to win offensive rookie of the year. A speedy, power-back like Elliott running behind the best offensive line in the league should equate to 1,000 or more rushing yards for the rookie out of Ohio State. Fans are dying to finally see if he can translate that college success into the NFL game. It will be interesting to see how many carries he gets in the Preseason with so much riding on his contribution this season.
