The Mitten Brewing Co., a Grand Rapids brewery that won gold and silver medals in the 2022 World Beer Cup, won a bronze medal this year for its Imperial Peanuts & Crackerjack Porter, in the field beer category. This beer was among our 2022 list of fall beers to try.

The World Beer Cup, which dubs itself "the Olympics of beer," is hosted by the Brewers Association. While it used to take place biennially (every other year), the competition was annualized last year.

The three medals for Michigan breweries are a drop from last year, when six breweries earned medals, and 2018, when 10 state breweries took home awards, including four gold medals. There was no competition in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

This year's competition totaled 10,213 entries from 2,376 breweries representing 51 countries. A panel of 272 judges from 26 countries evaluated the beers across 103 categories covering 176 different beer styles.
