MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Three people were taken to the hospital after being injured in a shooting in Soulsville just after midnight Thursday morning.

Memphis Police officers responded to a shooting in the 1100 block of Race Street. They found 56 shell casings at the scene, according to a report.

One woman was found lying on the ground with multiple gunshot wounds. She was taken to Regional One in critical condition.

Two people were also shot in a vehicle at the complex. A man was shot in the thigh. He arrived at Regional One by private vehicle.

While at the hospital, officers found a third victim. He said he was asleep inside a car when he heard gunfire. He exited the vehicle and was shot in the right knee.

Shukriyyah Aquil, who has lived in Soulsville for many years, says crime is a problem.

“I just got this car, it still has drive-out tags. I’ve gotten my car stolen and it’s kind of a down trotting area. I call the police at least twice a week. They know me by name,” she said. “I do hear quite a few gunshots at night, but I pray for peace.”

A search of the Memphis Data Hub shows 46 calls for police in that area so far this year. Locals say a nearby apartment complex is a hotspot for escalating crime.

Police say, there is no suspect information at this time, but the investigation is ongoing.
