3 fires and an oil spill: Busy day of fires and other incidents keep Eugene Springfield busy

The Eugene Springfield Fire Department had a busy Easter Sunday responding to multiple fires, a fuel spill, medical emergencies and other related calls.

Mobile home and tree fire in Santa Clara

Early Sunday morning, multiple trees and a mobile home caught fire near River Road and Swain Lane in the North Santa Clara neighborhood of Eugene.

Crews were first notified of the fire just after midnight and with support from Lane Fire Authority, began to attack the fire and perform a search of the residence as they conducted firefighting operations, according to a release from the fire department.

The resident and her son were not at the home at the time of the fire, according to the release. Crews were able to control the fire.

The Lane Fire Authority is performing an investigation to determine the cause of the fire.

Fuel spill at Fred Meyer

On Sunday afternoon, fire crews responded to a fuel spill at the Fred Meyer fuel depot near Division Avenue and River Road.

Upon investigation, crews discovered that the fueling hose had become disconnected from the fuel tank and the owner was unaware there was a malfunction. Because of this, a large volume of fuel spilled from the tank.

As of Sunday, the Eugene Springfield Fire hazardous materials team was working with Fred Meyer staff to mitigate the spill.

"Fortunately modern fuel facilities are able to contain spills within the facility protecting the storm runoff systems and regional treatment facilities," Eugene Springfield Fire Chief Mike Caven said in a written statement. "Crews are verifying all systems are opening properly and there is no contamination within the storm water system."

Apartment fire in West Eugene

Also on Sunday afternoon, Eugene Springfield Fire responded to an apartment fire at Redwood Park Apartments near 18th Avenue and Bertelsen Road.

Firefighters responded to the scene around 3:15 p.m. where they discovered a fire on the back side of an eight-unit apartment building, according to a release.

Crews extinguished the fire before it entered the living areas of several residents who were unaware of the fire.

The fire marshal's office is conducting an investigation.

Industrial fire at Weyerhaeuser Trus Joist

On Sunday night, Eugene Springfield Fire Department responded to the scene of an industrial fire at Weyerhaeuser Trus Joist near Bertelsen Road and Cross Street in West Eugene.

Crews responded to the scene just after 7 p.m. after receiving reports of a press on fire inside the facility.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire before it extended to the building or other equipment.

No injuries were reported.
