3 Final Questions before Packers’ Training Camp

Packers Training Camp
Packers Training Camp

The Green Bay Packers reported for training camp yesterday and the team will begin practicing on Tuesday.

With so much to look forward to in the 2016 season, there are still a few questions that remain that I will be looking at having answered when camp wraps up and we look to the start of the season.

The following are three questions that are still burning within my soul and hopefully I will have answers to.

How did Eddie Lacy do at losing weight?

Since the moment head coach Mike McCarthy made comments about Lacy’s weight, Packers Nation has been watching his progress. When Lacy reported to the OTAs in May, many people were relieved that he looked better and slimmer, but others said he looked the same. What can we expect with the start of camp?

Lacy has continued to work with P90X founder Tony Horton and that can mean good news for what he wants to accomplish. I think Lacy will hit his target weight, but that can bring up another question that I will be looking at during the preseason. How did losing the weight help Lacy’s game?

If Lacy comes in at the weight the Packers want him (which should be in the 220-pound range), will he as good as he was in 2014? Will he be able to run over defenders and be an all-around back?

I may have found more questions than answers for Lacy, but I believe all of those should be an emphatic yes if he were to be playing around 220 pounds. This would allow Lacy to be more agile, but have the size of a small truck as well.

Will the Packers really move on from John Kuhn?

The Packers seem like they are ready to move on from fan-favorite Kuhn by not re-signing the bruising fullback this offseason. However, crazier things have happened in the preseason matchups and injuries can happen at any given moment.

Kuhn still lives in Green Bay and continues to work out so he can be ready if the Packers give him a call. I don’t understand why the Packers were unable to come up with a deal with Kuhn, but it is sad to see him remained unsigned with the team.

The Packers’ offense needs his leadership and blue-collar attitude. There’s still plenty of time for Kuhn to re-sign with the Packers. Again, there are injuries that can happen. But more than injuries, the Packers might see that the players assigned to replace Kuhn aren’t doing the job and could give him a call.

Pete Mortell or Tim Masthay?

What’s better than a good ol’ fashioned punter duel? For the second time in as many seasons, Masthay will be punting for his job. To his credit, Masthay does hold the team records for career gross yards at 44.2 and net yards 38.7.

With hang time and distance being an issue for Masthay in 2015, the Packers brought in Green Bay native Mortell in for a try. Mortell’s family has worked in the Packers organization for years and this is a dream come true for the undrafted rookie.

In Mortell’s final season at the University of Minnesota, he booted the ball for 3,215 total yards and averaged 43.4 yards. With the harsh conditions of Minnesota, the Packers are hopeful Mortell can replicate that type of productivity in front of his hometown crowd.

The job is Masthay’s to lose so it should be interesting to see if he can keep his job for a second year in a row. Who knew punters could be so exciting?
