LEAWOOD, Kan. — The Leawood Police Department reports that three people died Sunday morning in two separate single-car crashes.

The first happened around 4:30 a.m., when Leawood police were called to a crash at the 135th Street and Chadwick intersection. The driver of a car ran into a 45-year-old Overland Park man, killing him at the scene, according to authorities. The driver remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators.

“Our officers arrived moments later and found that it was a pedestrian, started CPR, and other first responders got there,” Capt. Brad Robbins with Leawood Police said. “But unfortunately, that person was pronounced deceased at the scene.”

Leawood Police are looking for more information about the pedestrian-involved crash.

“We do know he was struck on the further south lane for eastbound traffic. So if anybody was traveling eastbound on 135th early this morning and saw anything, they can call the TIPS hotline,” Robbins said.

The second crash occurred around 7:30 a.m. at the College Boulevard and Mission Road intersection. Police said a witness who was running on the Tomahawk Creek trail saw a white pickup truck leave the road, crash and roll several times.

“There are a lot of curves, and people speed around the curves, and I think that’s probably what happened,” Overland Park resident David Garcia said.

Police said the truck was going south on Mission Road before it crossed the center median, left the roadway, and rolled at least once.

The driver and passenger were both pronounced dead at the scene. Police identify them as a 29-year-old KCK man and a 32-year-old man from Illinois.

“With the second crash, speeding was most likely involved. Just as I said, judging by the distance, they went off the roadway,” Robbins said. “So, if you’re unfamiliar with the area, be sure and slow down and look around and not speed up, even if you are, in fact, running late.”

When the second crash was reported, the Leawood Police Department’s crash investigators were still working the first crash on 135th Street.

“It definitely stretches our resources, but we were able to call in some people off duty to come in and help respond,” Robbins said. “The fact that it transitioned between the overnight shift and the day shift gave us additional officers to be able to cover what we needed to do and still provide protection for the rest of the city.”

Investigators are working to notify the next-of-kin for all three victims as well as determine what happened in each of these crashes.

“Unfortunately, there have been crashes that have taken multiple lives, but to have two separate crashes that are both fatalities within such a short time span is extremely uncommon.

“In Leawood, we haven’t had events back to back like this in the 20-plus years I’ve been here,” Robbins said.

Leawood detectives are investigating both of these crashes further.
