I-25 north of Fort Collins shut down in both directions due to head-on crash

Interstate 25 north of Fort Collins shut down in both directions Wednesday afternoon following a head-on collision in a construction zone.

Colorado State Patrol responded to the crash about 1:45 p.m. near mile marker 279, near Wellington. Due to ongoing construction in that portion of I-25, the northbound and southbound lanes are sharing the northbound lanes, according to a news release from state patrol.

Investigators believe a car traveling southbound lost control for unknown reasons and traveled to the right side of the road into the center median, according to the news release, then traveled back into the northbound lanes and hit the side of a semi-truck traveling north.

The car then spun into a second northbound semi-truck, which was traveling directly behind the first.

The driver of the car, a 65-year-old female, was transported to the hospital with serious injuries, according to the release. Neither of the semi-truck drivers were injured.

Investigators do not suspect impairment, but they are considering if unrelated medical events contributed to the crash.

Last year, there were 16 roadway deaths in construction zones statewide, a 60% increase from 2022, according to the state patrol.
