24-year-old sentenced in deadly Blue Springs shooting

BLUE SPRINGS, Mo. — A 24-year-old Kansas City man pleaded guilty Monday in a deadly Blue Springs shooting.

Zaylen Smith pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and armed criminal action in Jackson County court. He was sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Smith was charged in the deadly shooting of 46-year-old Gregory Marchand in Blue Springs.

Another Kansas City man, 24-year-old Donavan Jordan, is also facing charges of unlawful possession of a firearm and resisting arrest, in connection to the deadly shooting.

Prosecutors said the three men were meeting for a marijuana deal that turned deadly. Jordan told detectives that Smith opened Marchand’s door, shot him and stole the money.

The two men were found in Kansas City later that night following a police chase that ended in a crash.

Jordan is scheduled for a jury trial in September.
