22-year-old woman dies two years after Mother’s Day shooting in Broward left her paralyzed

A 22-year-old woman paralyzed after a drive-by shooting on Mother’s Day in 2022 has died almost exactly two years later, deputies say. Still, no arrests have been made.

Dru’Niyyia Griffin died Tuesday, the Broward Sheriff’s Office said in a media release. She was shot just as Mother’s Day was coming to an end about 10:30 p.m. on May 8, 2022, in the 2800 block of Northwest 15th Court in unincorporated Central Broward, near Fort Lauderdale.

Griffin was only 20 at the time. She had been sitting in the driver’s seat of her Honda Accord with a man who has not been identified when what may have been a dark SUV drove by, firing multiple shots at them.

Video footage shared by BSO shows Griffin’s car stopped in the road before the other car pulls up next to it, slows down and unleashes fire directly at the Accord. Many of the bullets appear to go through its windows.

When deputies arrived, they found Griffin with several gunshot wounds. Broward Sheriff’s Fire Rescue transported her to Broward Health Medical Center with critical injuries, according to the release. The man came to the hospital a little while later, received treatment, and was released.

After the shooting, Griffin was placed in long-term care.

“I’m in such disbelief I’m torn and broken still didn’t sink in yet baby,” her mother, Elease Griffin, wrote on Facebook Thursday. “It’d be selfish of mommy to ask for you back because I know you’re free baby no more pain no more suffering.”

The investigation has been turned over to BSO Homicide Unit detectives. Anyone with information should call Homicide Det. Lacey Henry at 954-321-4328 or contact Broward Crime Stoppers at 954-493-TIPS (8477).
