2024 Primary Election: Live updates, what to know on Super Tuesday in San Diego County

SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) — Super Tuesday is here and San Diegans that haven’t voted yet are making the effort to cast their vote or drop off ballots before the deadline.

Here’s what you need to know for the 2024 Presidential Primary Election.

Super Tuesday (March 5) is underway, when voters in 16 states and one territory cast their ballots in the 2024 presidential primaries, and voters here in San Diego County have until 8 p.m. to choose their favorite candidates.

Super Tuesday: What it is and why it matters

Once voting ends, the counting will begin by the Registrar’s office. Election night results will start to come in shortly after 8 p.m.

Notably, this year is a presidential election year so the stakes are higher. This primary will decide who squares off in the 2024 presidential election in November.

The Associated Press reports no one will become the presumptive nominee after Tuesday’s primaries, but President Joe Biden and former President Donald Trump are expected to get close.

Voting is open in San Diego County from 7 a.m. until 8 p.m. You must be in line at a vote center or at an official ballot drop box by 8 p.m.

There are 217 vote centers and 146 official ballot drop boxes around the county.

The county communications office on Monday reported the Santee-Lakeside Elks Lodge is no longer serving as a vote center. Voters in that area will instead be directed to the two nearest vote centers — Lakeside Community Center and Willowbrook Golf Course.

If you’re not registered to vote and want to participate in the election, you can visit any vote center to conditionally register and vote provisionally through March 5.

All eyes are on California’s race for Senate to succeed the late Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein, who died last fall. Two front runners have emerged — Congressman Adam Schiff and former Padre Steve Garvey.

California uses a top-two primary system, where all candidates appear on the same ballot. Then the two with the most votes, regardless of party affiliation, move on to the general election.

If you already turned in your mail ballot, you can confirm it was received by the Registrar’s office at sdvote.com or track it through the U.S. Postal Service with Where’s My Ballot?

The Registrar of Voters told FOX 5 Monday that 1.9 million San Diegans are registered to vote, and Tuesday will be a very busy day with many people showing up to vote last minute.

If you plan to vote for president, the Registrar urges voters to review each political party’s rules.

Voting centers will be open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Super Tuesday. Mail in ballots must be postmarked by March 5.
