Here are the 2023-24 All-Observer boys’ and girls’ indoor track teams

Hough senior Tim Brown, Cuthbertson’s Charlotte Bell and Myers Park’s Mary Bonner Dalton are The Observer’s high school indoor track athletes of the year.

Hough’s Brown, a senior, is the boys’ indoor track runner of the year after winning the 4A indoor state title in the 500-meter dash.

Brown ran the state’s fastest time in the 500-meter dash this indoor season, 1 minute,2.69 seconds, at the Virginia Showcase, which was also the third fastest in the nation and second-best in state history.

Brown also anchored his team’s 1,600-meter relay team to a 4A state championship.

Brown will continue his track career in college at High Point University.

Providence Day’s Ben Hovis is the boys’ coach of the year after guiding the Chargers to the N.C. Independent Schools Division I state title.

Providence Day won the crown by 47 points.

The Providence Day boys’ indoor track team has won all five private school state indoor titles since the inception of the event in 2020.

Cuthbertson’s Bell and Myers Park’s Bonner Dalton share girls’ runner of the year.

Bell, a Georgetown University commit, repeated as the 4A indoor state champion in the 1,600-meter run, breaking her own state record with a time of 4:44.75.

Bell also was state runner-up to her own teammate, Justine Preisano, in the 1,000-meter run indoors.

Dalton, a Notre Dame commit, was the 4A state indoor champion in 3,200-meter run, while earning 4A state runner-up in the 1600-meter run at the same meet.

Dalton ran the nation’s second-best 3200-meter run this indoor season in 10:13.07.

Dalton was also the Charlotte Observer girls’ cross country runner of the year last fall.

Cuthbertson’s Dustin Allen is The Observer’s girls’ coach of the year after guiding the Cavaliers’ girls’ team to their seventh straight NCHSAA state indoor title.

Cuthbertson has won the last three 4A state titles, after taking 3A state indoor championships from 2017-20.

Cuthbertson won the 2024 state indoor title by 15 points over runner-up, Olympic.

Boys’ indoor track team

First Team

55-meter dash: Christian Dixon, Mallard Creek: The Mavericks’ junior ran an Observer-area best time of 6.35 seconds to win the preliminaries at the Liberty Flames’ High School Invitational.

300-meter dash: Josiah Wrice, Butler: The Bulldogs’ senior ran an Observer-area best 34.50 to finish third at the Bulldog Invitational.

500-meter dash: Tim Brown, Hough: The Huskies’ senior and 4A state champion also ran the state’s best time this indoor season in 1:02.69 at the Virginia Showcase.

1000-meter run: Kyle Barney, Marvin Ridge: The Mavericks’ junior ran a personal and area-best time of 2:31.03 at the Mondo Elite Invitational; also finished fourth at 4A state indoor championships.

1600-meter run: Thomas Wlazlowski, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ senior ran a personal-best 4:17.60 at the Virginia Showcase, also finished fourth at the 4A indoor state championship.

3200-meter run: Raghav Gopalakrishnan, Ardrey Kell: The Knights’ senior, a University of Pennsylvania commit, was the 4A indoor state runner-up in a personal-best 9:13.12.

55-meter hurdles: Charles Spellings, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ senior ran a personal-best 7.54 to finish second at the 4A indoor state preliminaries, then finished fifth overall at the state championship meet.

800-meter relay: Mallard Creek (Tyson Williams, Nassor Ashenafi, Mason Kelley, Travis McFadden): The Mavericks’ quartet won the 4A state indoor title; also ran an Observer-area best 1:28.49 at the Liberty Flames’ High School Invitational.

1,600-meter relay: Hough (Morris Johnson, Wyatt Stoner, Colin Dickey, Tim Brown): The 4A indoor state champions ran the state’s second fastest time of the indoor season (3:24.60) in their title run.

3,200-meter relay: Marvin Ridge (Michael Keller, David Rivlin, Ishan More, Kyle Barney): The Mavericks ran a 7:57.76 to finish as 4A indoor state runner-up.

High Jump: Tommy Pringle, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ freshman had a breakout season with 4A state runner-up finish jumping 6-4.

Long Jump: Andrew Davis, Ardrey Kell: The Knights’ junior jumped a personal-best 22-7 to finish third at the 4A indoor state championships.

Triple Jump: Jayden Wentz, Olympic: The Trojans’ senior was the 4A indoor state champion in a personal-best and N.C.-best 46-8 this season.

Pole Vault: Eli Clark, Weddington: The Warriors’ senior was the 4A indoor state champion in a personal-best vault of 15-0.

Shot Put: Christopher Stewart, Weddington: The Warriors’ senior threw a personal-best 56-10 3/4 at the Providence Polar Bear, also finished third at the 4A indoor state championships.

55-meter dash: Janiya Johnson, Statesville: The Greyhounds’ senior, a Virginia Tech commit, was the 3A indoor state champion; also ran the state’s fastest time in this event with 6.91 seconds in the 3A state preliminaries.

300-meter dash: Aria Wegh, Marvin Ridge/I’Ja Walter, Olympic: Wegh, a Wake Forest commit, ran the state’s second fastest time (39.47) in the event. She also finished fourth at the 4A indoor state championships. Walter was the 4A state champion in a personal-best time of 39.50.

500-meter dash: Margaret Garner, Porter Ridge: The Pirates’ senior ran a personal-best 1:14.27 to win the 4A indoor state championship. Garner is a Liberty University soccer commit.

1,000-meter run: Justine Preisano, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ senior, an N.C. State commit, was the 4A state indoor champion. She also ran the state’s fastest time 2:51.08 at the Virginia Showcase.

1,600-meter run: Charlotte Bell, Cuthbertson: The Cavaliers’ senior, a Georgetown University commit, was the 4A state champion breaking her own state record in 4:44.75. That was the second fastest in the nation this indoor season.

3.200-meter run: Mary Bonner Dalton, Myers Park: The Mustangs’ senior, a Notre Dame commit, ran the nation’s second fastest time in 10:13.07 this indoor season at the Virginia Showcase and also won the 4A state indoor title.

55-meter hurdles: Aria Wegh, Marvin Ridge: The Mavericks’ senior, a Wake Forest commit, ran an Observer-area best time of 7.95 to finish third at the 4A state indoor championships.

800-meter relay: Olympic (Faith Wright, I. Walter, Journee Gordon, Janya Barnes): The Trojans’ quartet won the 4A state championship in 1:42.23.

1,600-meter relay: Olympic (J. Barnes, Aleila Barton, I. Walter, J. Gordon): The Trojans’ relay won another 4A state title, also the state’s best time indoors in 3:58.93 at the Virginia Showcase.

3,200-meter relay: Cuthbertson (Piper Mathers, Josie Schihl, Ava Walters, Stella Kermes): The Cavaliers’ relay ran a 9:25.51 to finish as 4A state runner-up.

High Jump: A. Wegh, Marvin Ridge/Ashlynn Wimberly, Mallard Creek: Both Wegh, a senior, and Winnerly, a junior, each jumped an Observer-area best 5-4 at the 4A state indoor championships.

Long Jump: Chazmin Johnson, Berry: The Cardinals’ senior jumped an Observer-area best 18-9 1/2 to win the JDL Holiday Invitational.

Triple Jump: Nia Poole, Providence Day: The Chargers’ senior, a Penn State commit, was the NCISAA state champion in 39-8 1/2, jumped an area- and personal-best 40 1/2 at the Turn Up the Heat Invitational.

Pole Vault: Lily Houston, Northwest Cabarrus: The Trojans’ senior won the 3A state title in a personal and area-best 12-3.

Shot Put: Tyler Glover, Ardrey Kell/Camryn Massey, Ashbrook: Glover, a senior and Harvard University commit, won the 4A state indoor title in 46-9. Massey, the 3A state indoor champion, jumped the state’s best 46-9 1/4.
